Complex Aluminum Soap--Grease Properties and Applications

Aluminum complex grease made from benzoic acid and stearic acid. It appeared relatively late, around the 1960s. Aluminum complex grease has the following advantages.

(1)Composite aluminum-based grease has a high dropping point, generally greater than 250 °C, and its service temperature can reach 200 °C.

(2)The damping grease complex aluminum base grease has a smooth and delicate outer dry film agent white grease appearance. Its soap fibers are thin and short, and thus have good mechanical stability. The thickening ability of mineral oil is strong, so the amount of soap is small. It has good pumpability and good mechanical stability, and is suitable for centralized lubrication systems.

(3)The complex aluminum-based grease has good water resistance and good metal protection, so it is especially suitable for the lubrication of the iron and steel industry.

(4)Composite aluminum-based grease has unique thermal reversible properties, that is, when heated and then cooled, the original structural properties can be restored in a short time.

Disadvantages of aluminum complex grease:

(1)The preparation process of composite aluminum soap is relatively complicated, and the earlier production process is prepared by the double decomposition method of sodium soap and aluminum sulfate. The complex aluminum soap prepared in this way needs to go through a process of high temperature expansion when preparing the grease, so the energy consumption is relatively large, and the performance of the grease is also affected. If the direct reaction of aluminum isopropoxide is used to make grease on the spot, although it is more convenient, the isopropanol will be released and the recovery will be difficult. Aluminum isopropoxide is more expensive. Since 1971, foreign producers of compound aluminum-based grease have used isopropanol trimer as raw material to produce compound aluminum-based grease, while the production route of using aluminum isopropoxide to produce compound aluminum-based grease is in the process of elimination. . However, the preparation process of aluminum isopropoxide trimer is relatively complicated, so the production cost of dry lubricant for composite aluminum-based grease is relatively high. Compared with aluminum isopropoxide, aluminum isopropoxide trimer is not easy to absorb moisture and hydrolyze to form aluminum hydroxide in the air, and has greater solubility in base oil. The composite aluminum-based grease prepared from the polymer has the advantages of stable properties and good repeatability.

(2)The aluminum soap has strong thickening ability to mineral oil, but it has poor thickening ability to synthetic oils, such as silicone oil, ester oil, polyether, etc., and even does not form grease.

(3)Compared with lithium complex grease and urea base grease, the bearing operating life of complex aluminum base grease is not too long.
