How does temperature affect grease selection?

2020-10-21 14:49:39

The components of lubricating grease are base oil, thickener and preservative, and the application temperature of lubricating grease is also related to these three components. Grease has a certain application temperature range, and lubricating grease has a certain application temperature range. Different greases have different temperature ranges. When users use and buy grease, the temperature range of application is an element to be considered. . Let's talk about how temperature affects the choice of grease?

  1. Characteristics of grease at high temperature

The immediate damage of overheated application of grease is accelerated air oxidative mildew and conversion to acid. Special attention is that if there is a local high temperature at the lubrication point, it will also cause the grease air to oxidize and deteriorate, and it will slowly spread. Local high temperature is likely to be caused by poor bearing installation, too much or not enough grease, wrong product oil, vibration, heavy load and other problems.

Air oxidation of the grease will darken the tint and the resulting acid will cause the thickener to dissolve, allowing the base oil to flow out of the thickener. Grease is actually thickened grease. The thickener adsorbs the base oil like a sponge to prevent excessive outflow, so lubrication is mainly oil lubrication. If the base oil flows out, although there is lubricating grease on the surface, the lubricating ability is basically gone. During the air oxidation process, we can observe the change in the consistency of the grease, such as hardening or thinning, and oil coming out.

  2. Ultra-low temperature characteristics of grease

Under the ultra-low temperature standard, the grease will be thicker and thicker, that is, the strength will increase, and the ultra-low temperature characteristics of the grease are also directly related to the base oil. Normal temperature liquid, ultra-low temperature will reduce the fluidity or even stop flowing. Grease stops flowing when it falls to a certain temperature, which is called the pour point. Greases with a lower pour point can be used at lower temperatures. The pour point of mineral oil is generally -20~-30℃, but the pour point is generally lower than the application temperature.

The ultra-low temperature torque is one of the key index values of the ultra-low temperature characteristics of grease. At ultra-low temperatures, the grease thickens and increases in strength, which can cause a conduction block effect on the rolling bearing. The ultra-low temperature torque is the level at which the grease conduction retards the rotation of the rolling bearing under ultra-low temperature. The ultra-low temperature torque of the grease is indicated by the average value of the motor torque and the torque after running for a period of time. The smaller the motor torque value measured by the grease at the ultra-low temperature, the smaller the starting output power consumption; conversely, if the ultra-low temperature motor torque of a certain grease is large, it is very likely that the rolling bearing will be stuck. application.

  3. Maximum application temperature of grease

One of the index values of lubricating grease is the dropping point, but the dropping point is not equal to the maximum application temperature. The maximum application temperature allowed by the grease is generally 30°C~50°C lower than the dropping point. . Greases above the dropping point, even if they are refrigerated, have already destroyed their properties and are not suitable for application.

  4. Minimum application temperature of grease

The strength of the lubricating grease will increase when the temperature decreases, which will affect the normal transportation of everything. As a result, the lubricating grease cannot reach the lubrication point enough, and the equipment lacks lubrication when it is cold started. The minimum application temperature of the grease must be higher than the minimum operating temperature during cold start, and at lower temperatures, a grease should be used to generate a grease, such as a grease with PAO as the base oil.

The temperature characteristics of greases are also different within the application range of greases. Lubricating grease is mainly lubricated by base oil. If the base oil has good viscosity-temperature characteristics, the viscosity will be relatively stable during the temperature transition.

Although the main components of lubricating grease are base oil and thickener, the level of temperature damage to base oil and thickener is different. Consistency, the change in consistency is slow until the dropping point is reached. Therefore, when purchasing grease, it is necessary to recognize the characteristics of the base oil. The above is the effect of grease application on temperature.
